We want to connect Lawrence families and provide them support regarding youth substance abuse through informal face-to-face meetings and online discussions.  Do you need help talking to your child about the hard topics, like drug and alcohol use?  We have created a safe place for discussion and conversation about these topics through an online blog.  The blog is full of information and relevant articles.

Lawrence Parents Group

 

Targeted Audience

Parents of Free State High School students (parents of all students is Lawrence middle and high schools are

welcome, as well as parents of underage students at KU)

Activities

1. Monthly one hour meetings to be held on a weeknight at Free State High School (e.g. 7PM – 8PM on the 2nd

Thursday of every month of the school year), with discussion topics and guest speakers

2. Possible periodic social gatherings involving parents and children (e.g. picnic)

3. Possible subgroups meeting and focusing on specific topics

Ground Rules

1. No unsolicited advice

2. No kids names, unless they are your own

3. No cross talk

4. No judging of kids – they are all capable of making mistakes

5. No talking about other people’s kids outside of the meeting

Objectives

1. Network with other parents of school age children

2. Discuss topics of concern to parents related to their children

3. Educate parents about current trends, dangers and pitfalls facing today’s youth

4. Discuss strategies for monitoring activities and protecting our children

5. Encourage stronger communication between parents and children

Sample Discussion Topics

1. The importance of being connected as parents

2. Trust between parents and their kids

3. Here’s what’s happening in Lawrence amongst our teenage population

4. Discussion of tools available, including those available on The New Tradition Coalition website

5. Sharing information about our homes and values

6. Having a “go to” parent for our kids when they don’t want to talk to us

7. Where are kids getting alcohol

8. Looking for signs of alcohol and drug use

9. Cell phones, texting, sexting
